Mikkel Jensen Mikkel Jensen

Mikkel Jensen is a seasoned aviator and educator with a career spanning diverse sectors of the helicopter industry. As a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), he built a foundational expertise in the Robinson family, including the R22, R44, and R66 platforms, where he developed a passion for precision and safety in flight training. His experience includes:

  • Navigating the demanding conditions of the Gulf of Mexico behind the controls of the Bell 206 and Bell 407.
  • Serving the Pacific Northwest in complex Single-Pilot IFR (SPIFR) environments, operating the Airbus H125 and H135.

Beyond the cockpit, Mikkel has served as a Part 135 Instructor Pilot and Check Airman for Helicopter Air Ambulance operations, specializing in pilot mentorship to ensure the highest standards of aviation safety.

James Martin James Martin

James Martin began his pilot career in Hawai’i, looking up at the tour helicopters and wondering "why not me." He attained his helicopter certificates and ratings at Mauna Loa Helicopters on Oahu, Hawaii. He then moved to Florida and joined Palm Beach Helicopters as a CFI, eventually becoming Chief Instructor. Next, he moved to Alabama to start instructing officers in the U.S. Army's Initial Entry Rotary Wing program. While in Alabama he began flying airplanes, attaining his SEL, MEL and SES ratings.

He is experienced in the Robinson R22, R44, Bell JetRanger and Airbus UH72A Lakota (EC45) helicopter airframes.

James joined Flight First in 2025, bringing his unique experiences and knowledge to the team, helping Flight First maintain its position as the best-in-industry helicopter-focused source of training materials.

One manual, zero gaps

Stop piecing it
together.

Flight training is expensive — every hour you spend confused in the air costs real money. You could gather the knowledge from a dozen scattered sources, or learn it once, properly, from one manual written for the helicopter you fly.

Piece it together Scattered
  • Scour forums and videos for maneuver explanations
  • Decode generic handbooks that weren't written for your helicopter
  • Scribble notes that make less sense the next morning
  • Hear it explained differently by every instructor
  • Re-learn on the ground what you paid to learn in the air

Slow, inconsistent, and full of gaps — the expensive way to learn.

Start here
Start with Flight First One manual
  • Every PPL and CPL flight maneuver, explained step by step
  • Flight controls and instruments covered one by one
  • Written for the Robinson R22 and R44 you actually fly
  • Illustrated so it sticks before you're in the air
  • Digital edition updated for you, free, for life

Show up prepared. Spend your flight hours flying — not figuring it out.

Start with the manual

You'll have to learn it either way. The only question is whether it takes one manual — or a hundred scattered sources.

Inside the manual

From the controls
to the checkride.

Twenty-seven chapters and maneuvers, written and illustrated for the Robinson — in the format that fits how you study.

Helicopter flight training in progress

Every maneuver, step by step

Each maneuver walks you through the technique from setup to completion — in text and graphics, with notes on the details that trip students up. Read it the night before, and the flight lesson confirms instead of confuses.

Robinson helicopter cockpit in flight

Written for the Robinson

From the opening chapters on flight controls and instruments to hydraulic-off landings in the R44, everything is specific to the R22 and R44 — the helicopters you actually train in. Nothing generic, nothing borrowed from airplanes.

Robinson flight controls illustrated in the manual

Master the Robinson

Unlock the full potential of the world’s most popular training helicopters. This manual goes beyond basic maneuvers, offering a deep dive into the unique handling characteristics and aerodynamic principles of the Robinson R22 and R44. Whether you are a student pilot preparing for your first solo or an aviator seeking a thorough refresher, our guide provides the clarity and confidence you need to operate these aircraft with precision and safety.

Robinson instrument panel breakdown from the manual

Robinson-Specific Instrumentation

Understanding your cockpit is vital for safe flight. We provide a comprehensive breakdown of the Robinson instrument panel. Gain a professional-level understanding of the instrument gauges specific to the R22 and R44 airframes.

Basic maneuver pages from the manual

A Solid Foundation

We strip the basic maneuvers down to their core mechanics. You won't just learn the maneuvers; you’ll learn the "Robinson touch".

Maneuver tolerances aligned with the FAA ACS

Built for the Checkride

Leave the guesswork out of your training. Every maneuver is meticulously aligned with the FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS). We provide the exact tolerances—airspeed, altitude, and heading—required to pass your checkride. By training to these specific metrics from day one, you ensure that there are no surprises when you finally have an examiner in the seat next to you.

Pilot's point-of-view sight picture illustration

Pilot's Point of View

One of the hardest parts of flight training is knowing where to look. We provide unique "Pilot’s Eye" illustrations that replicate the actual sight pictures you’ll see through the windscreen. These POV visuals prepare your brain for the real-world cues you'll encounter in the seat.

Maneuver flight path visualized from an external perspective

Maneuvers visualized

To master the Robinson, you need to see the physics in action. We’ve moved beyond simple descriptions to provide professionally rendered, high-fidelity illustrations of every maneuver. These diagrams show the aircraft's attitude relative to the horizon and the resulting aerodynamic forces, allowing you to study the flight path from an external perspective before you ever pull pitch.

Advanced maneuver pages from the manual

Reach a Higher Level

We teach you how to refine your control inputs until they are nearly invisible, preparing you for the demands of commercial operations and the high expectations of the industry's top flight schools.

Slope landing procedure illustrated

Master Every Maneuver

We provide a comprehensive guide to complex procedures, including sloping ground landings, confined area operations, and pinnacle approaches. Each maneuver is broken down by phases, giving you a repeatable blueprint for success in even the most challenging flight environments.

Pinnacle approach illustrated

Helicopter-Specific Operations

The Robinson R22 and R44 have unique operational envelopes that require specialized knowledge. We provide the technical theory and the practical recovery techniques necessary to fly these airframes safely at their operational edges.

Autorotation guide illustrated in the manual

Autorotations

Mastering the art of the engine-off landing is the hallmark of a great helicopter pilot. We provide the most in-depth guide available on autorotations in Robinson helicopters.

I’m not sure why I hadn’t seen this book earlier in my training. It should be standard reading in my opinion. Super well structured and very in depth content. There’s basically no comparison with the FAA book.

I have been using this book to better understand the maneuvers and different techniques before going up in the aircraft. The Helicopter Flying Handbook doesn't really go into as much detail. I will be recommending this book to my future students! Great foundation.

Mark Walker Verified

This is an amazing tool. I was a new student pilot working my way through the program at my local flight school and I needed some more guidance. This is exactly what I needed. I really like all the illustrations and visualizations. Highly recommended!
