Mikkel is a Part 135 Instructor Pilot and Check Airman in helicopter air ambulance operations. He started out as a CFI in the Robinson R22, R44 and R66, then flew the Bell 206 and 407 in the Gulf of Mexico and single-pilot IFR in the Airbus H125 and H135 in the Pacific Northwest.

James earned his helicopter ratings in Hawaii, became Chief Instructor at Palm Beach Helicopters and went on to teach officers in the U.S. Army’s Initial Entry Rotary Wing program. He has flown the R22, R44, Bell JetRanger and Airbus UH-72A Lakota, holds SEL, MEL and SES airplane ratings, and joined Flight First in 2025.
